Kwesi Edman: Cello

We're delighted to have local cellist Kwesi Edman performing in the lobby on Sunday afternoon. The perfect accompaniment to Pop's Kitchen's flavoursome menu! Cassava fries and cello? YES!

Raised in Birmingham in a house where there was always music; calypso, soca, soul, country, reggae, dancehall and gospel featured heavily. Kwesi Edman began playing the cello aged 13. He studied at King Edward’s school and after winning a scholarship to study with David Strange and Philip Sheppard at the Royal Academy of Music where he studied for a total of 6 years.

His career blossomed after the Academy to include: collaborations with dancers from Punchdrunk (choroeographer: Connor Doyle) perfomances with Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields; Beijing Olympics’ closing ceremony alongside David Beckham, Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page; Head of Chamber music at Forest School; Cellist for Urban Soul Orchestra; Principal Conductor for Kuumba (an orchestra for BME children based in East London); founder, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Chamber Academy Orchestra in 2007 with whom he performed the Elgar concerto; Head of Performance, Advanced and Alpine courses at Oxford Cello School (record holder for the most consecutive years teaching [debated annually!]) and most recently joining Chineke!, the UK’s newest cutting–edge professional orchestra which celebrates BME classical musicians’ contributions past present and future to the international art world.

Paresha Amin

Inhabiting an urban place, the landscapes in my paintings are a longing for nature that I have not experienced.

These depict combinations of real landscapes that I have encountered and imaginary landscapes that exist in my mind. They are an amalgamation of scenes that I have come across in films, magazines, alighted upon whilst walking and imagined whilst reading books and poetry, rather than strictly observed landscapes. They depict an ‘in-between’ place, a place that could exist between the real and the imagined, and a place where the action of painting takes me. These artworks interrogate the relationship between the liminal places of memory, nature and fantasy with the material world of paint and colour.
